Brendan Patterson

Brendan Patterson

 

Dr. Patterson joined the staff at the Cleveland Clinic after over 25 years of service at MetroHealth, a major public hospital system. He was appointed Chair of Orthopaedics in 2018. Dr. Patterson joined the faculty of MetroHealth in 1992 following an orthopaedic residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and an orthopaedic trauma fellowship at Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.

He served as Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery in the MetroHealth System for over 10 years, was promoted to Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 2012 and was Executive Director of Surgical Services for the MetroHealth System for nearly five years. His areas of expertise include limb salvage, complex fractures and adult reconstruction.

Dr. Patterson graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College in 1981 majoring in economics and chemistry. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and was elected as President of AOA in his fourth year. He received his Masters in Business Administration from the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University in 2000.

He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and an active member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. His academic contributions are related to limb salvage and complex lower extremity fractures.

He was site principal investigator for the LEAP Study, funded by NIH. Dr. Patterson was a member of the Board of Directors of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association for ten years and served as its Chief Financial Officer for four years.

Dr. Patterson led the development of the OTA knowledge portal that moved all of its educational materials to a digital format. In 2009 he led the establishment of the Center for Orthopaedic Trauma Advancement, a 501(c3) organization whose primary mission is to develop funding for the education of orthopaedic trauma fellows.

In 2010 he orchestrated the development of the Northern Ohio Trauma System and served as its Chair for three years during which time trauma mortality in the region was lowered by 40%. He is also a member of Twentieth Century Orthopaedic Association and is an instrument rated pilot.

Dr. Patterson is past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The MetroHealth Foundation and serves on the board of Apollo's Fire, a grammy winning, baroque orchestra. He is married to Dr. Elizabeth Patterson, a math educator at Hathaway Brown School.

Drs. Patterson have two daughters Caitlin Haught, a graduate of Hathaway Brown, Amherst College and Harvard Business School and Nell Patterson a graduate of Hathaway Brown and Amherst College. Caitlin and Nell live in Boston, MA. Caitlin works for Cambridge Associates and Nell works Indigo, an agribusiness start-up.
