Our Regional Initiative
About Stop the Bleed
In response to the rise in gun violence and mass casualty events across the country, the White House, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the American College of Surgeons came together following the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in 2012 to launch the Stop the Bleed® initiative.
This nationwide program empowers everyday people to take immediate, lifesaving action during bleeding emergencies. As part of this mission, NOTS has made Stop the Bleed a regional priority, and all hospital systems within NOTS actively support and offer this education.
What we are Doing
Our Goals:
- Train bystanders to recognize life-threatening bleeding and control it using direct pressure, wound packing, and tourniquets.
- Expand Stop the Bleed education in local schools, reaching both teachers and students.
- Equip law enforcement officers with the skills to control bleeding in victims, fellow officers, and themselves.
- Empower EMS, firefighters, and healthcare professionals to become instructors through our Train the Trainer program.
