Dr. Craig Bates graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 2001. He completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at the MetroHealth/Cleveland Clinic/Case Western Reserve University combined residency program in 2004. He was in the first group of physicians board certified in the subspecialty of Emergency Medical Services in 2013.
Dr. Bates has been faculty in the MetroHealth Department of Emergency Medicine since 2004. He is currently the director of the Emergency Medical Services Division within the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Assistant Program Director for the Emergency Medical Services Fellowship at MetroHealth. He regularly functions as a flight physician for Metro Life Flight and has previously served as the medical director for that program. He is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. His academic interests include air and ground critical care transport, integration of EMS into trauma systems, and the management of agitated patients. He has traveled with Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic as a shipboard physician since 2016.
